3. What is ideology and how is it used in the criminal justice system. Ideology is a widely held set of believes that justify the status quo and its inequalities. The criminal justice system contributes to an ideology by conveying the message that the poor are the worst threat to society and that there criminality is a result of individual failings rather than social iniquities. There is an ideological message that supports the status quo built into any criminal justice system by its nature. Suppose that the criminal justice system was not failing and it were not biased against the poor it would still by nature send a message supportive of institutions. By doing that the implicit ideology of criminal justice is implied. By showing that there is a failure in the system and make a note that it is biased towards the Porter that is sending an additional ideological message. That message is known as a bonus of bias. The system we have in place focuses on an idea that criminal activity happens on individual basis as opposed to institutions. Another way the criminal justice system conveys an ideology from the presumption that the criminal law is nothing but a politically neutral minimum requirement in order to live any decent social life.
